Projects in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is a country in the horn of Africa with more than 110 million inhabitants. Due to improved health care and strong economic growth, life expectancy has improved significantly in recent years. According to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), 23.5% of the population lives below the poverty line.

In August 1999 Siddartha, together with 5 enthusiastic young Ethiopians, started working in the capital Addis Abeba. Since May 2001, Siddartha Development Ethiopia is also a locally recognized NGO.

In January 2000 we started our first project for single mothers. Then came our initiative for young women in poverty prostitution, the homeless, sewage children, AIDS orphans. Only in the projects in Addis do we currently have about 60 staff members, all Ethiopians, of which more than 40% of the staff used to participate in one of the projects themselves.

Our projects:
Andinet – housing and vocational training for sewer children
Ediget Fana – training center for single mothers
Glorieux – homeless support
Little Heaven – housing and support of HIV infected children
Siddartha Youth – youth movement
Social Infrastructure – construction of toilets and sanitary facilities in the slums
